What Is Suboxone® Treatment?

Suboxone® is an FDA-approved medication that treats opioid use disorder by easing withdrawal and cravings. At our Palos Heights clinic, treatment also includes counseling and follow-up care, so working patients across southwest Cook County get the full program in one place.

Your first dose starts once you are clearly in withdrawal, which depends on what you have been using and how recently. In the early weeks, you come in every day while your medical provider adjusts your dose. You switch to a take-home prescription and visit our clinic less often once your dose is steady.

FDA-Approved

Medication for opioid use disorder

Suboxone® is a full medical treatment for opioid use disorder.

Suboxone® quiets withdrawal and cravings, allowing you to focus less on use and more on the goals you want to achieve.

How Suboxone® Works

When you start Suboxone® at our Palos Heights clinic, you and your medical provider set the dose together. They consider your withdrawal status, opioid history, and how you have responded to medications before. Here is how the medication works:

01

Quiets Withdrawal

Your withdrawal symptoms ease within about an hour of your first dose. You feel level and clear-headed.

02

Holds Through the Day

Your morning dose carries through the full day, so cravings stop running your week.

03

Creates Capacity

Once your dose is steady for a few weeks, you can focus less on cravings and more on your job, your family, and your goals.

Is Suboxone® Right for You?

Suboxone® can work for you if:

You can wait until you are in withdrawal before your first dose.
You want a medication that includes naloxone for added safety.
Suboxone® worked for you before.
A previous prescriber recommended Suboxone® for you.
You want take-home prescriptions so you are not tied to a daily clinic visit.
You want a visit schedule that loosens as you get better.

If you are not sure what to take, our medical providers prescribe both Methadone and Suboxone® . During intake, you and your medical provider walk through your opioid history, withdrawal pattern, and dosing preference to find the right medication.

Suboxone® Clinic Palos Heights: Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I start at your Palos Heights Suboxone® clinic?

You can schedule an intake assessment the same day or next day. Your first Suboxone® dose follows once your withdrawal symptoms are clearly present, which depends on what you have been using and how recently. Intake hours: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 5:30 AM to 6:30 PM, Wednesday from 5:30 AM to 5 PM, and Friday from 5:30 AM to 2 PM.

Do I have to visit your Palos Heights clinic every day for Suboxone®?

Yes, you come to our Palos Heights clinic every day during your first weeks of treatment while your medical provider adjusts your dose. After your dose is steady, you switch to take-home prescriptions and visit less often.

Can I switch from Methadone to Suboxone®?

Yes, you can switch from Methadone to Suboxone®. At intake, you and your medical provider review your current Methadone dose and how long you have been on it. Together you determine the timing needed to start Suboxone® safely. Whether the switch is right depends on your situation.

How long does Suboxone® stay in your system?

Suboxone® stays in your system for an extended period. Detection times vary by test. Urine tests pick it up for seven to 10 days after your last dose. Blood tests detect it for two to three days, and hair tests for up to 90 days. Most standard workplace drug tests do not screen for buprenorphine, though specialized panels may detect it.

Can I take Suboxone® in Palos Heights if I am pregnant?

Yes, Suboxone® is one of the clinically accepted MOUD options during pregnancy. Our Suboxone® clinic medical providers communicate directly with your obstetrician through pregnancy and the postpartum period so that prescribing and OB care stay synchronized.

What if Suboxone® is not working for me?

If Suboxone® is not working, you and your medical provider figure out why and adjust your plan. Options include changing your Suboxone® dose, adding counseling sessions, treating co-occurring mental health conditions, or switching to Methadone. You stay in treatment while your plan adjusts.

What makes your Palos Heights Suboxone clinic different?

Three things set us apart. First, during each visit you have real time to adjust your plan and discuss your week. Second, you visit the clinic less often as you get better. Third, counseling is in the same clinic, with no separate referral.

Is counseling included at your Suboxone® clinic in Palos Heights?

Yes, counseling is included for every patient at our clinic with no monthly limit. Come to a session every week, save them for high-stress periods, or add them during life transitions. Counseling availability extends through your full treatment.

What is the overdose risk with Suboxone®?

Suboxone® has a lower overdose risk than other opioids. Unlike other opioids, Suboxone® has a ceiling effect, so beyond a point, more of it does not slow your breathing further. The bigger risk comes from mixing Suboxone® with benzodiazepines, alcohol, or other sedatives. Tell your medical provider about every medication you take, including over-the-counter drugs. All patients starting Suboxone® should have naloxone available at home for emergencies.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a single dose, take it as soon as you remember. If your next scheduled dose is close, skip the missed dose and continue your normal schedule. Do not take two doses to catch up. If you miss several doses in a row, call our Palos Heights clinic at 866-955-2481 before starting again. Your medical provider may adjust your restart timing to avoid uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms, which can happen if Suboxone® restarts too soon.
