What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured addiction treatment program you attend several times a week while living at home. It gives you more support than weekly counseling, without the residential stay of inpatient care. At our Vernon Hills clinic, that means group counseling three mornings a week, with the rest of your week wide open.

During each session, you join a group of people at a similar stage of recovery. You also get one-on-one time with your counselor, and skills practice you can use when cravings or stress hit hard.

Each group has 12 patients or fewer and is led by a counselor licensed in Illinois. When the session ends, everyone heads back into the rest of the day, whether that means errands in Vernon Hills, a noon shift in Buffalo Grove, or kids to pick up in Lake Forest.

Is an IOP Right for You?

This program is built for adults who need more than a weekly counseling session but cannot step away from their job and family for inpatient care. An IOP may be right for you if:

You can come on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning every week.
Inpatient treatment is not realistic given your work, family, or finances.
Outpatient counseling once a week is not enough for where you are in recovery.
You finished detox or residential treatment and need ongoing clinical care.
You have a steady place to come home to in Lake County or the North Shore.
You can show up three mornings a week without missing sessions.

Wondering whether this program is right for you?

At your intake, you talk through your history with your counselor and medical provider. If outpatient care or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) would serve you better, we will tell you.

How Symetria’s IOP Is Different from Other Vernon Hills Programs

Lake County IOP options are limited; most patients drive into Cook County for treatment. Our Vernon Hills clinic is the only Symetria in Lake County, with Methadone, Suboxone®, and counseling under one roof.

Small Groups
Join a group of 12 patients or fewer, where a counselor makes sure everyone has the chance to be heard.
Unlimited Counseling
Schedule one-on-ones with your counselor as often as your recovery needs, with no limit on the number of sessions.
Adaptive Treatment Plan
Stay in the program even if you continue to use. To your counselor and medical provider, a setback is a signal to adjust your plan, not a reason to remove you.
MOUD-Friendly
Take Methadone or Suboxone® and attend IOP sessions at the same Vernon Hills clinic.
Lake County Access
Choose the only Symetria clinic in Lake County and skip the drive into Cook County.

Vernon Hills IOP: Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

An IOP gives you targeted addiction treatment on a part-time schedule. You get the counseling hours and clinical oversight of serious treatment, but you fit it around your week instead of pausing your life for it. Our Vernon Hills program runs three sessions a week, nine hours in total.

How does an IOP actually work week to week?

Each week, you attend Monday, Wednesday, and Friday sessions from 9:00 AM to 12:15 PM. Each session starts with a check-in and moves into group counseling led by a counselor licensed in Illinois. After a 15-minute break around 10:30 AM, you continue with skills practice or one-on-one counseling. Friday session includes a progress review. Outside of group sessions, you can schedule unlimited one-on-one sessions with your counselor.

What if I miss an IOP session?

Call our team at 866-955-2481 as soon as you can. We help you reschedule into another session or set up a one-on-one catch-up so you do not fall behind. Missing a session is part of life; the team plans around it with you.

How often do I attend IOP sessions at your Vernon Hills clinic?

You attend three sessions per week at our Vernon Hills clinic: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, 9:00 AM to 12:15 PM. Each session is roughly three hours, for a total of nine hours of counseling per week. You can also schedule unlimited one-on-one sessions with your counselor.

What is the difference between inpatient counseling and an IOP?

Inpatient programs require you to live at a residential facility for 28 to 90 days. Our Vernon Hills IOP, on the other hand, allows you to stay home, with three sessions a week and nine hours of counseling at our clinic. An IOP works if you have a steady place to come home to.

What happens after I finish an IOP at your Vernon Hills clinic?

You can switch to weekly outpatient counseling or a long-term follow-up. You and your counselor decide together whether you are ready for the switch. There is no set end date for an IOP. The same care team stays with you as your needs change.

How do I know if an IOP is right for me?

An IOP may be the right fit if any of these sound like you. You have tried counseling every week, and it is not getting you where you need to be. Your week has room for three weekday mornings but cannot accommodate 28- to 90-day residential treatment. You finished detox or inpatient and want continued clinical care. Call 866-955-2481 to discuss your assessment.

What are the benefits of IOP at our Vernon Hills clinic?

You get nine hours of weekly counseling without taking time away from work or family. Most insurance plans cover IOPs, with little to no out-of-pocket cost for many patients. If you are prescribed Methadone or Suboxone® (buprenorphine-naloxone), you can take your medication at the same Vernon Hills clinic where you attend IOP sessions.

Does insurance cover the IOP at your Vernon Hills clinic?

Most commercial insurance and Medicare plans cover IOPs. The IOP billing code is the same regardless of clinic location, so coverage depends on your plan’s outpatient mental health benefits. Call 866-955-2481 with your insurance card and our team verifies benefits in minutes.

How do I get into your Vernon Hills IOP?

Call 866-955-2481 to schedule your intake assessment. Intake hours are Monday through Thursday until 3 PM and Friday until noon. Bring your insurance card and any current medication information. After your intake, you join the next IOP session on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday morning.
