What Is an Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP)?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured level of addiction treatment you attend several times a week while living at home. It gives you more support than weekly counseling, without the residential stay of inpatient care. At our Palos Heights clinic, that means nine hours of group counseling a week.

At Symetria Recovery, every IOP session is led by an Illinois-licensed addiction counselor in groups of twelve patients or fewer.

You will not be the only one balancing treatment with a job and a family. Our patients come from across southwest Cook County, Alsip, Midlothian, Chicago Ridge, Worth, Oak Forest, Oak Lawn, and Orland Park, and most are working through recovery the same way you are.

What Happens Each Session:
Group counseling led by a licensed addiction counselor (12 people or fewer) Skills training (cravings, communication, managing stress) or one-on-one sessions with your counselor A review of your progress with your counselor every week
Note: Most patients complete our IOP in nine to twelve weeks. You can stay longer if you need more time, or switch to weekly outpatient care earlier if you get better faster.
Need to change your schedule?
When work or life changes your availability, talk to your counselor and switch between morning and evening sessions. Both run every week.

Is an IOP Right for You?

An IOP works for people caught in the middle: weekly counseling is not enough, but leaving home for residential treatment is not an option. It might be right for you if:

You want more support than weekly counseling, close to home.
You completed detox or inpatient and want continued care.
You have a safe place to go home to each night.
You can fit three weekday sessions around work, morning or evening.
You work days and need evening sessions.
You want regular weekly support to stay on track.

Not sure whether an IOP is right for you?

On an intake call, our clinical team reviews your history with you and tells you honestly whether weekly outpatient treatment or an IOP is the better fit.

How Our IOP Is Different from Other Palos Heights Programs

Most programs give you one schedule and show you the door if you relapse. Our Palos Heights IOP works differently: morning or evening sessions, unlimited one-on-one counseling, and a team that adjusts your plan instead of removing you if you continue to use.

Small Groups
Each session includes 12 patients or fewer, so there is room for everyone to be heard.
Unlimited Counseling
Unlimited one-on-one counseling is included in your IOP, any week and any number of sessions.
Family Counseling
A family member or a partner can be part of your IOP, whenever you want them in the room.
MOUD-Friendly Treatment
Methadone and Suboxone® treatment happens in the same Harlem Avenue building.
Adaptive Treatment Plan
Your counselor and medical provider update your plan each week to match where you are in recovery.

Palos Heights IOP: Frequently Asked Questions

What does an IOP at your Palos Heights clinic mean?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a step up from weekly counseling, with more structured treatment hours, while you keep living at home instead of staying overnight in a facility. At Palos Heights, our IOP runs three sessions a week, nine hours total. You can choose morning sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, or evening sessions on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

How long does an IOP at your Palos Heights clinic last?

Most patients complete our IOP in nine to twelve weeks, but the length depends on the progress you make. You and your counselor look at your progress every week and adjust the plan together. If you progress faster, you can step down to weekly outpatient treatment sooner; if you need more time, you can stay in IOP longer.

Can I keep my 9-to-5 job while in IOP at your Palos Heights clinic?

Yes, our evening sessions are built for working adults. Sessions run on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, after the typical workday ends. You can leave a 9-to-5 job and arrive at our Palos Heights clinic in time for group counseling.

What if I continue to use or return to use while in IOP?

You stay in the program. Your counselor and medical provider treat a return to use as a signal to adjust your plan, not a reason to remove you. That could mean a medication dose change, more one-on-one counseling, or added psychiatric support.

Is an IOP at your Palos Heights clinic covered by insurance?

Most commercial insurance plans and Medicare cover IOP treatment. To verify your benefits before your first session, call us at 866-955-2481 with your insurance card or fill out the verification form on our website.

Can I join your Palos Heights IOP while taking Methadone or Suboxone®?

Yes, methadone and Suboxone® are part of your treatment at the same Harlem Avenue clinic where you attend your IOP sessions. Your counselor and medical provider coordinate your dosing schedule with your IOP attendance: one referral, one intake, one insurance check.

What is the difference between an IOP and standard outpatient treatment?

An IOP is three sessions a week, nine hours total. Weekly outpatient treatment is one session a week. You usually start with an IOP when you need consistent counseling to handle cravings, build new routines, or recover from a setback. You can switch to weekly outpatient care when you feel steady that one session a week is enough to keep you moving.

How do I switch between morning and evening sessions at your Palos Heights IOP?

If your schedule changes, talk to your counselor about moving between the morning and evening tracks. Both run every week, so the switch is usually quick to arrange. It is common for patients to change tracks as work or family life shifts.

Who is a good candidate for an IOP at your Palos Heights clinic?

You are a good fit if you need more support than counseling every week. You can attend three sessions a week for nine to twelve weeks, with a stable home to return to between sessions. If you are dealing with a mental health crisis, untreated psychiatric symptoms, or unstable physical health conditions, you need a higher level of care first. Our intake team can help you find the right placement.

What if this is my first time in treatment for drug use?

Many of our patients start at Symetria with no prior treatment history. Your first session is a conversation about what you have been dealing with, what your daily life looks like, and what you want from the program. Your counselor and medical provider then build a plan with you. There is no expectation that you already know what you need.
