Rehab, Counseling and Therapy for Substance Use Disorder

Back to Blog Articles

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is not simply a physical reliance on a drug. It comes with an array of potential comorbid mental, emotional, physical and behavioral issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic guilt, drop in performance at work, trouble with the law and more.

"Treating the physical addiction is just the first step to rehab and recovery," states Symetria Recovery VP AnnMarie Fauske. "That’s why lasting recovery is best achieved with Medicine Assisted Treatment (MAT) combined with comprehensive behavioral and psychiatric treatment. This approach is designed to assist a patient in by changing mindset, teaching coping skills and developing long term behaviors regarding drug use, building or rebuilding healthy life skills, and learning positive ways to process information, manage emotions and develop safe coping strategies."

There are different types of counseling available for individuals, groups and family:

Individual Counseling

This helps a person set goals, open up about setbacks and celebrate points of progress in recovery. It includes different types of behavioral therapies, such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that teaches you coping skills, including how to manage stress, how to recognize negative patterns of thought and transform them into positive thoughts and behaviors.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of CBT that emphasizes the psychosocial aspects regarding how a person interacts with others in different environments and relationships.
  • Education and Continuing Care
  • Mindfulness-Based Sobriety
  • Relapse Prevention Therapy

Group Counseling

Meeting within therapy groups can help a person understand that he or she is not going through the issues of SUD alone. Individuals in group therapy learn new strategies for dealing with their issues by sharing each other’s challenges and their successes.  Groups can be beneficial to both patients and their loved ones who can learn how to support the recovery journey while being nurtured themselves. These can include:

  • Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) Support Groups
  • Positive Acceptance Towards Healing (PATH) Meetings
  • Sober Living Support Groups Education and Continuing Care

Family Counseling

These sessions include partners or spouses and other family members who are close to the patient. Family counseling is designed to help patients repair and improve their family relationships.

Counselors can also refer you to other counseling resources, such as:

  • Peer support groups, such as Smart Recovery
  • Spiritual and faith-based groups
  • Employment or educational supports
  • Organizations that can resource housing or transportation

"Success in rehab to recovery is best achieved in what is known as The Symetria Method," adds Fauske.  "By providing all services on an outpatient basis, under one roof - from MAT to ongoing counseling and behavioral treatments, a patient receives the benefit of having one team assigned specifically to him or her.  This team approach provides broad depth of expertise and dedication - accountability and continuity, whereby the patient can develop trust, dignity and confidence.  Everyone's road to recovery is different, so the team customizes the treatment plan best for that patient.  Even if he or she relapses.  Who knows?  You might even become one of our Recovery Peer Specialists."

The Symetria Method, a pioneering approach has an 88 % success rate for opioid recovery.  Unheard of results. Heroin, prescription drugs, alcohol and other substance use, dependency and addiction can all be treated effectively.
