An Overview of Rehab, Methadone, Suboxone, Vivitrol and IOP

Drug and alcohol rehab is a structured treatment program that combines medications, therapy and ideally, diagnosis and treatment for any underlying mental health issues too.

Symetria is a fully outpatient drug rehab, so patients live at home or perhaps in sober living and come into the clinic several times per week.

Outpatient rehab has shown to be just as effective as inpatient rehab. In fact, Harvard statisticians found that patients here are twice as likely to be sober in two years compared to any other treatment option.

Methadone is taken daily and only distributed by certified Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs).

Around 17% of opioid patients here choose Methadone. Methadone is a great option for chronic pain patients or those who haven’t had success with Suboxone or want extra accountability.

Methadone (Dolophine, Methadose) is a proven, FDA-approved medication used to treat severe opioid addiction, including heroin, fentanyl or prescription painkillers like Oxycontin.

Suboxone is a combination of the medications Buprenorphine and Naloxone. It’s FDA-approved to treat opioid / heroin addiction — including heroin, fentanyl or pain medications like Codeine, Vicodin, morphine, OxyContin and Percocet.

  • Buprenorphine is a partial opioid that satisfies the brain’s craving for drugs.
  • Naloxone is an opioid blocker used to prevent abuse.

Suboxone works to:

  • Alleviate withdrawal symptoms – to feel better right away
  • Fight cravings – so the brain isn’t constantly signaling for drugs
  • Stop other opioids – so if drugs like heroin are used, it doesn’t give off a “high”

Vivitrol is a monthly shot that helps prevent or lessen cravings for drugs or alcohol. The medication blocks receptors in the brain, so drugs and alcohol no longer activate reward centers in the brain.

If alcohol or drugs are used, they give negative hangover-type symptoms without the positive high feelings. There’s little motivation to continue using drugs or drinking alcohol while on Vivitrol. Vivitrol (naltrexone) is non-addictive, does not cause withdrawal symptoms when stopped and doesn’t require taking any medication at home. It’s a great to choice to make staying sober so much easier.

IOP involves group therapy sessions. The Des Plaines clinic offers both morning and evening options to work around your schedule. We recommend 3 sessions per week. That may seem intense, but certainly better than going to inpatient rehab for 5 weeks. And, IOP has shown to be just as effective.

You also have unlimited access to 1:1 therapy to discuss sensitive issues and to the psychiatrist to diagnose and work to treat any underlying issues like depression, anxiety or sleep.
