Vivitrol® is naltrexone given as a shot once a month by a medical professional. Since it is non-addictive, it’s a great option to reduce cravings for any substance use – especially alcohol, meth and those in early opioid addiction. Revia® and Depade are naltrexone in pill form that isn’t usually recommended. Asking someone struggling with drugs or alcohol to take a daily pill that will make using alcohol or drugs unpleasant isn’t setting them up for success. There is a clinical trial in Europe testing an implantable version of naltrexone, but this is not yet available in the U.S.
